23. CI Day 4: Return to the Crab Bridge and Blowholes & Departing Christmas Island

Happy Birthday to Beth Melby from the Christmas Island traffic circle!
We were given a late check-out time of 1 pm and Martin said we didn’t have to return the car until 3 pm when we saw him at Smash Coffee. This gave me time to take a long walk in the morning, for us to wish my sister a happen birthday in a unique Christmas Island way, and to visit the island’s history museum. We also had time to return to our two favorite spots.

The Crab Bridge was our first must-see-again. There were even more crabs marching towards the ocean than yesterday. But for the swarms of mosquitos attacking any bare skin, we could have stayed at the Crab Bridge for hours. We went to the airport to check in at 1:15, then returned to the Blowholes to relax until our return to the airport at 3:00 pm. The increased number of crabs coming out of their burrows across the island meant that the game of “Leaf or Crab” was more difficult. It was like I had leveled up in the game without leveling up in my skill set. If am ever back during full migration, I will not be driving a car.

We returned to Perth on time and without incident. The most notable part of the evening was seeing for the first time a hotel key card made from bamboo. Why don’t more hotels do this?

  1. Tonga has blowholes like you describe. Very cool! Sounds like a great last day on Christmas Island
